Bahrain marked the beginning of the United Nations’ 80th anniversary celebrations with a dynamic, youth-focused event at the Bahrain Science Center for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The initiative, organized by the United Nations Country Team in Bahrain in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and the Science Center, kicked off a three-day programme running from 25 to 27 October.
The celebrations highlight eight decades of global cooperation, peacebuilding, and sustainable development, while placing special emphasis on the pivotal role of youth in shaping the future.
Ahmed Ben Lassoued, Director of the United Nations Information Centre in Manama, reflected on the significance of the milestone, stating, “The UN’s 80th anniversary is a moment to reaffirm our commitment to multilateralism and international solidarity. The future cannot be built without youth.”
Shaikha Butti, Director of the Youth Enabling Department at the Ministry of Youth Affairs, echoed the sentiment, underscoring Bahrain’s pride in being part of the UN’s enduring legacy. She highlighted the strong partnership between the Ministry and the UN in empowering youth and advancing the 2030 Agenda, noting that hosting the event at the SDG-focused Science Center reflects a shared vision for a sustainable and inclusive future.
The opening ceremony featured a special message from United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, delivered on United Nations Day, 24 October, as well as a commemorative video showcasing UN resident coordinators and young changemakers from around the world. Over the next three days, attendees will enjoy a wide range of interactive activities designed to engage youth and the broader public in discussions about global development and innovation.
