‘Bakugan’ Live-Action Movie To Be Directed by ‘Rampage’s Brad Peyton
The world of toy-based movies is expanding even further. After the breakout success of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, it feels like every toy you once played with in your youth is being brought to the big screen. With brands like Matchbox and even Barney the Dinosaur getting new feature film adaptations, the floodgates have officially opened, as the next beloved children’s toy to be given its own live-action movie will be Bakugan.
Per Deadline, a live-action Bakugan movie is currently in the works from Spin Master Corp., the company who own the rights to the Bakugan IP. The new movie has already found its core staff, with Brad Peyton set to write, produce, and direct. This won’t be his first time turning a beloved game into a live-action feature, as he previously directed the Dwayne Johnson-led video game adaptation, Rampage, back in 2018. Peyton was also behind Johnson’s 2015 disaster flick, San Andreas, as well as Netflix’s panned 2024 sci-fi film, Atlas, starring Jennifer Lopez.
“Bakugan is ready for the film treatment, and I’m thrilled to be the one to bring it to the big screen for the very first time,” Peyton said in a statement. “With [co-writer] Lindsay [Harbert] and the Spin Master team alongside me, we’re excited to build a hit franchise with global appeal. I am confident we will create a must-see film event that does justice to the unique and epic world that is Bakugan.” No official release date for the Bakugan movie has been announced yet.
What Is ‘Bakugan’?
Bakugan was first created in 2007 by Aldric Saucier, and was sold to Spin Master the same year. You may remember seeing adverts for Bakugan plastered across your TV throughout the late ’00s and ’10s, as kids rolled small plastic balls onto metallic cards, which would then pop up like Transformers into spherical monsters.

Long-Awaited Video Game Adaptation Finally Gets Positive Update
Universal Pictures’ ‘Just Cause’ live-action adaptation is finally gliding forward.
Bakugan has already had several major adaptations. In 2007, Spin Master partnered with Sega to co-produce a Bakugan anime series. The anime was originally supposed to run for 52 episodes. However, after finding its fan base, the show ran for 189 episodes in total, across four seasons. The anime has since been revived countless times. While the new movie doesn’t have an official synopsis, fans can get some clues from the 2007 anime. Its synopsis reads:
“A bunch of more-than-ordinary playing cards drop from the sky, landing all over Earth. A group of friends who pick up the cards — Dan, Bruno, Marucho, Julie, Shun and Alice — team up to become the Bakugan Battle Brawlers. The Battle Brawlers must assist in the battle between good and evil in a parallel universe. As they learn more about the cards, they discover more about the power struggle in the alternate universe of New Vestroia, and do their utmost to help the Bakugan there win the day.”
For those looking to learn more about Bakugan before the movie comes out, but don’t want to spend a fortune on the toys, the 2007 anime is currently streaming for free on Plex TV.
