Get ready to end the year on a high note with the Silpakorn Thailand Jazz Competition 2025, a celebration of creativity, skill and the vibrant spirit of the genre.
Organised by the Faculty of Music, Silpakorn University, this annual competition stands out as one of Thailand’s most anticipated jazz events, inviting talented young musicians and vocalists from across the country to showcase their artistry and passion for the genre. The final round will take place on Dec 14 at the historic Wang Tha Phra Auditorium, Silpakorn University.
Aiming to elevate Thai jazz to international standards, the competition provides a vital platform for students, emerging artists and independent musicians to develop their craft and perform in front of expert judges and enthusiasts. Open to participants from every region, the contest offers three main categories — Jazz Combo Open Division; Jazz Combo Youth Division; and Jazz Vocal Solo Competition — each designed to highlight the creativity, improvisation and expressive musicianship that lie at the heart of jazz.
The Jazz Combo Open Division welcomes small groups of three to eight musicians of any age or background. Participants will perform one required piece — featuring compositions by Herbie Hancock — and one original or freely chosen jazz tune, allowing each ensemble to demonstrate both technical mastery and improvisational flair.
The Jazz Combo Youth Division invites younger players, currently in secondary school (up to Grade 12), to interpret jazz in their own voice. Each group must include at least five members, performing one arrangement of a Stevie Wonder composition reimagined in a jazz style, along with an original or standard piece.
The Jazz Vocal category opens the stage for singers of all ages to express their artistry through classic and contemporary jazz songs, accompanied by a live band.
Participants will first submit a video audition featuring two performances, after which selected finalists will be invited to perform live at the grand finale in December. Each act will have 10–15 minutes to captivate the judges with their ensemble performance or solo vocal presentation. The judging panel — comprising respected musicians and educators — will evaluate based on sound quality, rhythm, technique, interpretation and improvisational creativity.
A total of 235,000 baht in prizes will be awarded to outstanding performers. Each division offers a first prize of 50,000 baht, second prize of 30,000 baht and third prize of 20,000 baht, while the Jazz Vocal competition offers 20,000 baht, 10,000 baht and 5,000 baht, respectively. Winners will also receive certificates of recognition from Silpakorn University.
The Silpakorn Thailand Jazz Competition 2025 is going to be a meeting ground for creativity, learning and the shared joy of making music. Whether you are an aspiring artist or avid listener, this year’s event promises to be an unforgettable celebration of talent and sound. Don’t miss your chance to be part of Thailand’s growing jazz legacy — where the next generation begins.
