Barapullah Phase-3 Flyover to Be Completed by December, Says Delhi Govt; PWD Blames Past Inaction for Delays

New Delhi, May 12: The Delhi government has set a target to complete the long-delayed Barapullah Phase-3 flyover project by December 2025. Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh visited the project site on Monday and stated that construction work is progressing rapidly, and the remaining tasks will be completed within the set timeline.

This marks the Minister’s second visit to the site within just two months of taking office, underscoring the current government’s serious commitment to the project. Previously, the Minister had reviewed the work and since then, significant steps have been taken to accelerate progress.

Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh stated, “Our target is to operationalize this flyover by December 2025. It is an important infrastructure project for Delhi, which has suffered from neglect and inaction for several years. Since taking charge, we have prioritized this project and ensured progress on multiple fronts.”

The Barapullah Phase-3 project aims to connect Mayur Vihar Phase-I in East Delhi with AIIMS in South Delhi. It will integrate with the existing Barapullah corridor near Sarai Kale Khan, significantly improving east-west connectivity and reducing travel time across the capital. This project is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve daily commuting for thousands of citizens.

According to officials, about 89% of the construction work is complete. However, the remaining work is stalled due to pending approvals from the forest department for relocating around 250 trees.

Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh clarified that the main reason for the delay was the previous government’s inaction. “The earlier government did not release payments to contractors on time, nor did they initiate the process of tree relocation. As a result, this critical project was delayed for years, with escalated costs. We are actively working to complete the remaining work soon,” he said.

He further added that under the current government, especially with the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, there has been active coordination with the forest department to obtain the necessary clearances for tree relocation. “We are hopeful that the required approvals from the forest department will be received soon, allowing the final phase of construction to commence,” the Minister remarked.

The project was originally approved in 2014, and construction began in 2015. The initial deadline was set for 2017, but due to the previous government’s negligence, lack of inter-departmental coordination, and administrative inefficiency, the project was delayed repeatedly. Delays in approvals and other technical hurdles further held back progress.

PWD officials confirmed that with renewed oversight, technical issues have been resolved, and inter-departmental coordination has improved. Regular inspections are now being conducted to ensure the work stays on track. The current government has provided the necessary administrative support and resources to ensure the timely completion of the project.

Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh emphasized the government’s determination, saying, “For us, this is not just a project, but a significant step in the development of Delhi. Our priority is to ensure no project suffers from red tape or neglect, and all pending infrastructure projects are completed on time.”

Once completed, the Barapullah Phase-3 flyover will provide improved and faster connectivity between East and South Delhi, contributing to a cleaner, faster, and more efficient transport system in the capital.
