Malayalam actor Basil Joseph discussed how his 2025 movie Ponman altered his idea of himself as a performer in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He continued by talking about how it also altered how the industry regarded him.

‘Ponman made it possible to see another facet of myself as a performer’

According to Basil, his character, PP Ajesh, in this movie is based on a real person with exactly the same name, and they are still unsure of his whereabouts. “We anticipated that Ajesh would contact us following the premiere of the movie”. He added that however, he didn’t, therefore they are doubtful if the real Ajesh is still alive.

Basil mentioned that Ponman altered his perception of himself as an actor as well as how his peers viewed him. “Directors don’t mind when I replicate a gesture that has worked in any of my prior comedic flicks. But with films like Joji, Palthu Janwar, and Ponman, things changed. He underlined that a comedian’s breakthrough performance in a dramatic part often serves as the only way for them to gain recognition in the industry and among the filmmakers.
