Bassett Academy named ‘music lead’ amid Ed Sheeran funding call

Royal Wootton Bassett Academy, which was previously rated an ‘Outstanding’ school, has now been awarded another prestigious title as it prepares to become Wiltshire’s leading school for music.

The title has been awarded under the newly established Gloucestershire, Swindon and Wiltshire Music Hub (GSW) after a successful bid by music teacher Liz Hodgson.

The role will begin in April 2025 and will allow the school to work with other schools and organisations to promote music education.

The appointment less than a month after celebrities, including singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, sent a letter to 10 Downing Street emphasising the importance of music education and calling for more support.

Backed by artists including Harry Styles, Sir Elton John and Coldplay and Stormzy, Sheeran wrote to ask for funding to offer children from all backgrounds musical opportunities.

“State schools – which educate 93 per cent of the country’s children – have seen a 21 per cent decrease in music provision,” he wrote.

“Music in and out of school should be for all, not a few.”

“As the Wiltshire Lead School for Music, Royal Wootton Bassett Academy will play a pivotal role in enhancing music education across the region, fostering collaboration, and providing exceptional opportunities for students and educators alike.”

Liz added: “We are thrilled to take on this leadership role within the GSW Music Hub.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to further enrich our music program and to work closely with other schools and organizations to promote the importance of music education.”

More details about the initiatives and programs that will be launched as part of this new role are set to be announced in the coming months, but staff at Royal Wootton Bassett Academy say they can’t wait to get started.
