More often than not, we idealise people we see onscreen — sportspersons, actors, singers, models. One article on their lifestyle, and we’re quick to jump on their diet or daily routine in the hope of attaining that perfect body. But that’s exactly where the problem lies.
In the quest for a body or life like our favourite celebrities, we often forget that they have access to far more than we do — nutritionists, personal chefs, premium ingredients, and tailored fitness plans. So, blindly following a trend, diet, or ingredient your idol swears by may not always be the right fix for you. The latest example? Gwyneth Paltrow.
In an interview with British Vogue, Paltrow revealed that she tops her morning coffee with “raw cream.”
For the uninitiated, raw cream is the high-fat portion of unpasteurised whole milk that naturally separates or is mechanically skimmed off the rest of the milk.
As fancy as it sounds, it can have severe health repercussions. Like raw milk, raw cream can be risky because it’s derived from unpasteurised milk.
Some people believe that raw milk doesn’t cause lactose intolerance because it supposedly contains lactase secreted by “beneficial” or probiotic bacteria. While probiotics do play an important role in maintaining gut health, studies, including those by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), have shown that raw milk doesn’t actually contain probiotics. In fact, it carries several health risks.
Raw milk can harbour harmful bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria, and Staphylococcus, among others. For milk to be safe for consumption, these pathogens need to be eliminated.
According to the Government of India, raw milk should be boiled as soon as possible to kill any bacteria present.
Dr Vibhu Kawatra, Senior Consultant Pulmonologist and Paediatrician at Vibhu Nursing Home, New Delhi, says, “Raw milk is not recommended for drinking because it can carry bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria, and Campylobacter, which can cause serious gastrointestinal infections. It can also contain pathogens that lead to food-borne illnesses and pose health risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and pregnant women.”
He adds that prolonged consumption of raw milk can harm the kidneys, leading to E. coli-related infections and even kidney failure.
So, before you jump on to another celeb recommendation, take a moment to think it through. Everybody is built differently, and more importantly, access makes all the difference.
