Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru has recorded strong growth in both passenger and cargo traffic for FY25, crossing the 41 million passenger milestone and handling over 500,000 metric tonnes of cargo. Passenger traffic rose 11.6 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y), with international travel surging 25 per cent, driven by IndiGo’s expanding global network and increased frequencies by foreign carriers like Cathay Pacific, KLM, and Qantas.
Domestic passenger traffic grew 10 per cent, to 36.05 million, while international passenger numbers surged to 5.83 million, reflecting a 25 per cent on-year increase.
Commenting on growth in footfall, Satyaki Raghunath, Chief Operating Officer, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL),stated, “We believe that BLR Airport is very well placed to serve as the preferred gateway to South and Central India, and our investment in expanding airside, landside, and terminal capacity positions us perfectly for growth over the next few years. With an investment of over 17,000 crore over the next five years, we are well-prepared to support the rising demands of passenger and cargo traffic in the region.”
International cargo
The airport posted an increase in its cargo handling by 14 per cent year-on-year (YoY) at 500,000 metric tonnes (MT) mark for the first time, handling a total of 502,480 MT of cargo in the financial year 2024-25 (FY’25).
Cargo growth was driven by a 21 per cent rise in international cargo, totalling 321,418 MT, while domestic cargo grew 4 per cent, reaching 181,062 MT. Recently, the airport opened a new domestic cargo terminal with an initial capacity of 3,45,000 tonnes, expandable to 4,00,000 tonnes. The new facility is an addition to the airport’s existing cargo infrastructure, which currently has a combined capacity of 210,000 metric tonnes for both international and domestic cargo.
The Airport continues to lead in mango and coriander exports, with cargo demand further driven by ready-made garments, pharmaceuticals, and machinery parts.
