The BAFTAs red carpet isn’t just a glamorous affair but a precursor, a warm up if you like, for the biggest night in showbiz history: the Oscars. The A-list did not disappoint, arriving in a resplendent array of gowns and get-ups that belied the fact that our capital’s ‘feels like’ temperature is currently 0 degrees.
The Wicked double act to end all double acts, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, coordinated their wardrobe as per but, in a plot twist of epic fashion proportions, opted to wear the same designer: Louis Vuitton. Erivo’s white lace gown with a sculptural bodice will soon be on every directional bride’s mood board. Grande, on the other hand, did twist-on-a-classic Glinda, with more than a hint of sex appeal via a plunging black top half that swelled into a fairytale princess skirt.
Pamela Anderson, meanwhile, also provided bridal inspiration in pearl white Jacquemus. With a windswept fringe and minimal make-up, she once again took a less is more approach that was a breath of fresh air at the BAFTAs.
Timothee Chalamet parked the boot-leg jeans, hoodies and skull scarves for a very sharp suit by Bottega Veneta, putting his own spin on the tailoring situation with a double-stranded frosted necklace. His girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, joined him for the ceremony, holding his hand and, more importantly, matching his colour palette in black sequins.
If this is all starting to sound a little quiet luxury, there were also signs that there’s nothing wrong with dialling up the drama. Enter Demi Moore, whose high-necked gown covered with crystals was the definition of fashion magic by Alexander McQueen.
