‘Best ever’ WW2 film with 90% Rotten Tomatoes score is on Amazon Prime | Films | Entertainment

A harrowing depiction of the final days of Adolf Hitler is now streaming on Amazon Prime, offering one of the most acclaimed portrayals of the collapse of Nazi Germany ever committed to screen.

Downfall (2004), directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, dramatises the chaotic closing chapter of the Second World War from inside the Führerbunker, based on eyewitness accounts and historical records.

Adapted from the memoirs of Hitler’s secretary Traudl Junge and historian Joachim Fest’s book Inside Hitler’s Bunker, the film unfolds in Berlin during April 1945.

As Soviet forces encircle the city, the Nazi leadership descends into paranoia, infighting, and desperation. Bruno Ganz stars as Hitler, delivering a performance that has been widely recognised for its precision and unsettling authenticity.

The film made international headlines upon release for its portrayal of Hitler through a humanised lens – a decision that sparked both debate and praise. Critics have noted that rather than excusing his actions, the depiction highlights the dictator’s instability and the dangerous loyalty of those around him.

On reviewing platform Rotten Tomatoes, one viewer commented: “Absolutely fantastic film. Does it humanize Hitler? Yes. But guess what? He was human. And this shows him more as he truly was, which makes it all the more terrifying. 10/10 recommend.”

Much of Downfall’s impact comes from its commitment to accuracy in both setting and behaviour. The bunker’s claustrophobic corridors, dimly lit war rooms, and period-accurate uniforms immerse audiences in a crumbling world order.

The story doesn’t linger solely on Hitler but follows an ensemble cast, from military officers to civilian staff, all caught in the collapse. As one review put it: “One of the best war films made. Deals with last few days of Hitler and portrays the collapse of the Third Reich as they were – thugs and criminals, down to the last day. If you’re going to watch a film about Hitler this is a must see. The best acting of any film I’ve ever seen in my lifetime.”

The film’s historical setting is further grounded by the inclusion of archival footage and an epilogue that connects the events to the real people involved. Another viewer remarked: “Truly one of the greatest war movies of all time. What surprised me the most was that it was a German-made film, but it is better to learn from history than possibly repeat it. This movie is a true masterpiece of chaos and anarchy.”

Upon release, Downfall earned a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its uncompromising attention to detail and Ganz’s central performance. It went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

Downfall is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
