The SeaMeWe-6 subsea cable has landed in Chennai, India.

Indian telco Bharti Airtel, the landing partner for this portion of the cable, said it has successfully landed the cable to bring 220Tbps of capacity to India.

The 21,700km (13,500 miles) cable links France and Singapore via the Red Sea and is planned to have 17 landing points in 15 countries.

The cable is set to be operational in 2026. Bharti Airtel added it had already landed the cable in Mumbai at the end of last year.

SeaMeWe-6 will be fully integrated with Airtel’s data center arm, Nxtra by Airtel, at its Chennai and Mumbai facilities.

SubCom completed the cable landings.

“We are delighted to further strengthen our global connectivity by landing one of the largest cable systems into our facilities,” said Sharat Sinha, director and CEO of Airtel Business. “This complements our existing network strength of 400,000km across 50 countries. This also underlines our commitment to address digital India’s growing demand for global connectivity & data with additional routes, diversity, and capacity.”

The fiber pairs on the trunk of the cable from Bahrain to Oman – known as Al Khaleej – are fully owned by Batelco.

Bharti Airtel has investments in some 34 cables globally, including 2Africa, SJC2, and Equiano. The company has a presence in India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, and provides broadband and fiber services.
