Big Relief For Vintage Vehicle Owners In UP: Govt Starts Registrations For 50-Year-Old Cars, Bikes
As per a PTI report, vintage vehicle owners in Uttar Pradesh can now register their cars and two-wheelers under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) guidelines. Vehicles more than 50 years old are eligible for classification in the “Vintage” category, aligning with central rules introduced in 2021. The state transport department has resumed processing applications and is working on a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to ensure uniform execution. The move not only provides official recognition to heritage vehicles but also simplifies ownership documentation for collectors while preserving India’s automotive history.
Eligibility And Application Process
To qualify as vintage, vehicles should be at least 50 years old at the date of their first registration. The owner of the vehicle will submit an application with valid applicable documents supporting the age, ownership, and fitness of the vehicle to RTO.
The department made it clear that vehicles will not be considered as vintage automatically by their age. The owner has to apply at the concerned RTO or ARTO where the Motor Vehicle Inspectors judge the originality of the vehicle and keep photo records. Applications shall be entertained within a period of 60 days from the date of its receipt.
Registration Fee And Usage Restrictions
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) rules has set the registration fee for vintage vehicles at Rs 20,000. It includes the issuance of a registration certificate as well as a special number plate to be allotted in the “VA” series. This registration would be valid for 10 years, and can further be renewed afterward for Rs 5,000.
After registration, vintage vehicles cannot be used on a daily basis for regular commuting or commercial activities. They can only be put to use in certain events such as rallies, exhibitions, technical research, and occasional maintenance runs to keep them in condition. This will help in minimising road congestion and environmental impact.
Benefits For Enthusiasts
The official registration allows collectors to secure legal recognition for their vehicles, obtain proper documentation, and participate in heritage car rallies across states. Besides, it protects against any ownership disputes and improves the general value of the vehicles. The Uttar Pradesh transport department has started taking in applications again, and is putting together a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), aimed at transparency as well as uniformity of the process, ensuring vintage vehicle owners an easy and crystal-clear route to protect their prized possessions.
