Bisekhoto Gwirie wins 3rd Naga Open Wrestling Tournament in Delhi | MorungExpress

Event showcases indigenous Naga sport, cultural pride

DIMAPUR, MARCH 31 (MExN): Bisekhoto Gwirie of the Angami tribe emerged champion at the 3rd Naga Open Wrestling Tournament held at Rosary Senior Secondary School, Kingsway Camp, Mukherjee Nagar, on Friday.

Organized by the Poumai Naga Union Delhi (PNUD) in collaboration with the Poumai Tsiidoumai Me Delhi (PNTMD), the event brought together 28 wrestlers from diverse Naga communities including Poumai, Angami, Chakhesang, Meitei, and Zeliang. The annual tournament aims to promote and preserve the traditional indigenous sport of Naga wrestling in the capital.

Gwirie, who delivered a commanding performance throughout the competition, won the championship title along with a cash prize of Rs 50,000. Panumhuang from the Zeliang tribe finished runner-up, earning Rs 30,000, while Veikhole of the Poumai tribe took third place with Rs 20,000. Kethokhriezo Pienyii, also of the Angami tribe, rounded out the top four.

L. Dikho, a member of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, attended the event as chief guest. Praising the initiative, he highlighted the importance of promoting indigenous sports and encouraged youth to pursue wrestling both as a sport and as a viable career path.

“This is more than just a tournament—it’s a way to keep our traditions alive and relevant,” Dikho said.

Wennyei Konyak, Resident Commissioner of Nagaland House, New Delhi, attended as guest of honour. He emphasized the need for greater visibility and recognition of Naga wrestling beyond its traditional regions, calling for national and international promotion of indigenous sports.

Prof. Khole Timothy, president of PNUD, expressed gratitude to the dignitaries and participants, describing the event as a celebration of community, culture, and identity.

“This tournament is more than just a competition; it is a celebration of our rich cultural heritage,” he said. “It strengthens community bonds, fosters unity, and preserves our traditions.”

The event was supported by the Poumai Employees Welfare Association Delhi (PEWAD).
