Block Introduces Proto Rig And Fleet To Optimize Bitcoin Mining
- Jack Dorsey co-founded Block Inc. unveiled its new Proto Rig hardware and Proto Fleet software for Bitcoin mining.
- The products aim to democratize BTC mining through a modular architecture, enhanced system life, unified software, and reduced maintenance costs and times.
Block Inc. unveiled its new Bitcoin (BTC) mining rig this Thursday. The company, headed by Jack Dorsey as CEO and co-founder, hyped Proto Rig as a “first-of-its-kind modular Bitcoin mining system.” It comes with the Proto Fleet, a free and open-source software for fleet management.
Both promise to deliver a resilient system that will extend the lifespan of crypto mining rigs. They also aim to offer efficiency to operators. Together, they could boost the democratization of Bitcoin mining to allow more players to participate in the space.
Key Features of Proto Rig
Block’s Proto Rig marks a huge departure from disposable Bitcoin mining hardware models. As the company has put it, it is “designed to be an infrastructure.”
The rig employs a modular concept akin to a regular PC. Operators can upgrade or repair their individual hashboards without having to replace entire units.
According to Block, Bitcoin mining rigs have an average three to five years lifespan. After that, they’re completely discarded for a new one. Proto Rig ups the game with its 10-year lifecycle.
Additionally, the product’s design significantly reduces the cost of upgrading a Bitcoin mining system by 15% to 20%. River estimates that a typical ASIC miner could fetch over $10,000 nowadays.
Meanwhile, Proto Rig’s plug-and-play configuration makes the tuning process last only seconds, unlike conventional rigs that take hours, days, or even weeks to set up. This substantially contributes to the savings of resources and operators’ time.
“Mining hardware hasn’t really changed in years,” said Thomas Templeton, Hardware Lead at Block. “Machines break often, are hard to repair, expensive, and time-consuming to upgrade, and don’t make the most efficient use of power or space.
“With Rig, we set out to change all of that–and contribute to hardware decentralization in the process,” he added.
Proto Fleet: Complementing Proto Rig
Proto Fleet complements Proto Rig with its comprehensive, open-source fleet management system. It enhances the rig’s power-scaling, monitoring, and maintenance. Furthermore, its unified and intuitive platform allows the convenient management of all its functions.
Block explained that Proto Fleet wraps the features of what used to take individual pieces of software into an all-in-one system. Again, these help streamline Bitcoin mining operations while maximizing uptime and yield.
“Mining hasn’t really caught up with advances in software more broadly,” Templeton went on. “We saw an opportunity to make mining software something modern that improves operational efficiency instead of unnecessarily complicating things.”
Overall, the Proto Rig and Proto Fleet may come in handy amid the rising Bitcoin mining difficulty, coupled with the tighter competition in the space, as BTC experiences unprecedented institutional adoption and demand. Based on Blockchain.com data, the latest Bitcoin network mining difficulty is 130 trillion as BTC trades around $118K as of early Thursday evening (UTC).
