BMG Purchases Jason Aldean’s Full Catalog For $250 Million

Just four months after Zach Bryan turned heads and sold his entire publishing catalog to Warner Records in a staggering $350 million deal, Jason Aldean is the latest country artist to sell his catalog for hundreds of millions of dollars.

As reported by Bloomberg, today, the “She’s Country” singer has reached a deal with his BMG, the parent company of his label BBR Music Group, worth $250 million to fully acquire his entire recording catalog. According to BMG, the $250 million purchase of Aldean’s catalog is the largest catalog investment in the company’s history.

This, of course, allows BMG to own the full rights to Aldean’s discography which includes his 30 #1 hits such as “Big Green Tractor,” “Why,” “Try That In a Small Town,” “Don’t You Wanna Stay,” “Burnin’ Down and more. Additionally, they are now in control of all 12 of Aldean’s studio albums including the 4x platinum My Kinda Party, the 2x platinum Wide Open and Night Train and his most recent release, 2023’s Highway Desperado.

If you recall, Aldean originally signed a distribution and marketing deal with BMG in 2019, which expanded the record label’s rights to the Georgia native’s music worldwide. However, they did not own the entirety of his catalog released before the agreement. Before today’s deal, Spirit Music Group owned 90% of Aldean’s music released before 2019 with their reported $100 million purchase of his catalog in 2022. With this new deal, BMG now controls the entirety of his recording history, meaning they own all the rights to both his music itself and performance rights to the music publicly.

Thomas Coesfeld, BMG’s CEO, called the deal a “landmark” moment for the company, also noting that it strengthens their attempt to be the most effective “artist-first” music company:

“This landmark deal sets a new level of catalog acquisitions at BMG, while underscoring our commitment to the music and the discipline of our approach. By bringing together the iconic catalog of Jason Aldean, we are strengthening our footprint in country music while expanding across genres and deepening our investment in the U.S. This move highlights our ability to maximize the value of music rights and represents a powerful step in BMG’s strategy to be the most effective, artist-first music company in the world.”

Jon Loba, president of Frontline Recordings in the Americas and former president of BMG, praised Aldean’s output over the past two decades, claiming that Aldean has continually pushed the genre’s limits both sonically and lyrically:

“Jason Aldean’s debut album was not only a massive commercial success, it helped define the sound of country music for years to come. While his signature style has remained a common thread across every release, Jason has consistently pushed the envelope both sonically and lyrically. His unwavering commitment to evolution has ensured that each new album delivers something fresh for fans, while continuing to shape the direction of the genre itself. For millions, those albums mark key moments in their lives, which makes bringing them back to the place where they were born all the more meaningful.”

Finally, Aldean himself added:

“BBR Music Group and BMG have always shown a real commitment to my music and a belief in me as an artist. Knowing all of my music is in the hands of my long-time label team makes this a full-circle moment.”

The acquisition of Aldean’s catalog today is part of a larger push from BMG itself with the company acquiring over 1,000 songs from 23 artists and songwriters for an undisclosed amount overall.

With the reported amount of $250 million, Aldean joins the likes of Bryan, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd , Sting, Phill Collins & Genesis, Tina Turner and more, all of whom have sold their catalog or portions of it for north of a quarter of a billion dollars over the past five years.
