BOA decides to send men’s football team to Asiad
The Bangladesh Olympic Association decided to send the Bangladesh men’s football team in the 19th Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8, 2023.
‘The BOA informed us that the two football teams—men’s and women’s—will be sent to the Asian Games in China,’ Bangladesh Football Federation vice-president Kazi Nabil Ahmed told the reporters on Sunday.
Nabil, who is also a BOA vice-president, was speaking to reporters after the national team’s committee meeting at the BFF House.
Earlier on May 6, citing poor performance, the BOA in a meeting decided not to send the men’s football team to the Asian Games and was undecided over sending the e-sports team.
The day after the BOA’s decision, Nabil informed the media that the BFF made a request to the BOA president, General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed, to include the men’s team in the list.
However, the BOA decided to include men’s football team in the list and nullified e-sports through voting.
‘We got a request from the BFF to reconsider the issue, and our president asked us to conduct a vote to solve the issue…The voting results (which came out on Saturday) came in favour of the men’s football team,’ BOA vice-president Shaikh Bashir Ahmed Mamun told the media on Saturday.
‘There was another issue in voting, and it came out against sending the e-sports team to the event.’
Bangladesh’s men’s football team’s performance in the previous edition of the Asian Games in 2018 went in favour of its inclusion.
‘We discussed the issue and found out that their [men’s football team’s] performance last time around was good,’ said Mamun.
In the 2018 Asian Games, Bangladesh reached the second round for the first time after beating Qatar in their last group match.
With the inclusion of the men’s football team, BOA selected 17 sports disciplines—archery, athletics, cricket, football, fencing, gymnastics, hockey, golf, kabaddi, karate, swimming, shooting, chess, weightlifting, bridge, taekwondo, and boxing—for China.
However, the BFF appointed three Spanish officials to assist their compatriot and national team coach Javier Cabrera ahead of the SAFF Championship 2023, to be held in Bengaluru, India, from June 21 to July 4.
David Gomez has been appointed as assistant coach, Miguel Angel Anido as goalkeeping coach, and David Dobarro Magan as the physio, as the national team’s committee disclosed the decision after the meeting.
