Bosnian-Herzegovinian Film Festival returns to New York for its 21st edition

The Bosnian-Herzegovinian Film Festival (BHFF) kicks off in New York on April 23, celebrating its 21st edition. Once a small showcase, it has become a respected institution thanks to passionate volunteers from Bosnia, the region, and the US.

Executive Director Ivona Boroje told N1 that the inspiration for founding BHFF came when Danis Tanovic’s film “No Man’s Land” won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 2002, sparking enthusiasm both within and outside of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“Dr. Dzemaludin Harba invited interested individuals to create a film festival together. Alongside Benjamin Filipovic, the first festival was realised in 2003. Since then, we have showcased films by filmmakers from Bosnia and its diaspora, as well as films about Bosnia. In that first year, we screened five films—today we have 12. We also have a jury awarding prizes, along with an audience award. Additionally, we bring guests from the region,” Boroje explained.

New York’s film enthusiasts engage deeply with the festival, particularly drawn to themes of war and post-war trauma. The event provides a platform for filmmakers, academics, and young Bosnians to reconnect with their heritage, while even attracting volunteers with no Balkan ties.

BHFF also explores cinema as a means of processing trauma, featuring Ada Hasanovic’s film “My Father’s Diaries” and highlighting women directors.

The festival runs from April 23 to April 26, showcasing 12 films and welcoming seven guest speakers. An opening night celebration and awards ceremony are also planned.

“We hope viewers continue to support Bosnian cinema and spread the word about BHFF,” said Executive Director Ivona Boroje.
