Brie Larson Joins J.J. Abrams’ New Horror Creature Film ‘Fail-Safe’
J.J. Abrams is producing a new horror film that includes the star of Captain Marvel, the director of Strange Darling, and the writer of No One Will Save You. The Cannes Film Festival is currently underway, and while many films playing at the festival are looking for buyers or distributors, the festival is also known for when major deals are struck on future potential projects. It was recently confirmed that a John Rambo prequel film was being shopped around at the festival, and now J.J. Abrams is launching what sounds like an exciting new spin on the creature feature, with some big names already attached.
Deadline reports that Brie Larson is set to star in Fail-Safe, a new horror film directed by JT Mollner with a screenplay by Brian Duffield. Abrams, best known for directing films like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Trek, is set to produce Fail-Safe through his company Bad Robot alongside FilmNation Entertainment’s production label Infrared. The premise, adapted from a short story by Philip Fracass, is “a modern take on the creature horror film told from the perspective of a young boy who slowly begins to discover that his beloved parents are hiding a disturbing secret about his mother’s true nature.” Regarding Fail-Safe, Abrams said:
“With Fail-Safe, Brian Duffield has written an absolute powerhouse of a script. It’s a horror film that is as sweet and moving as it is terrifying. To have JT Mollner in the director’s chair — his Strange Darling blew me away — is a dream come true. Finally, having the limitlessly talented Brie Larson as our star sets up Fail-Safe to be that rare horror film that makes you laugh, feel, and care, before taking you on an absolutely wild ride.”

On the surface, Fail-Safe certainly sounds like an exciting project. Strange Darling was one of the most exciting original horror films of 2024 and put JT Mollner as a director to watch. Brian Duffield’s No One Will Save You was another critically acclaimed psychological horror film that mixed alien invasion and home invasion for a fun genre mash-up in a creative no-dialogue story. Meanwhile, Brie Larson is one of the most talented actors working today, having won an Academy Award for her role in Room when she was just 26 years old. With a resume that includes a wide array of titles like Short Term 12, Kong: Skull Island, 21 Jump Street, and Captain Marvel, Larson has shown she is comfortable stepping into any genre. Drew Simon, the President of Production at Infared, spoke highly of Larson, saying:
“I’m beyond excited to see Brie take on this role – it’s frightening, emotionally charged, and so different from anything she’s done before. The depth and intensity this character demands is immense, and I know Brie’s going to bring something unforgettable to the screen.”
Any new project featuring an actor who plays a Marvel superhero raises questions about how it can or will impact their future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Larson, notably, was not one of the names unveiled in the massive Avengers: Doomsday five-hour live stream, leaving many to wonder what role Captain Marvel will have in the future of the MCU. Following the disappointment of The Marvels‘ box office, some fans have started to worry that Larson might be moving on from the franchise and that the MCU itself will downplay Captain Marvel’s importance.
Larson’s Captain Marvel is rumored to be part of the next round of casting announcements for Avengers: Doomsday, which is currently filming in London. There is no word on if or when Fail-Safe will begin filming, or how it would impact her potential availability for Doomsday. Fail-Safe likely won’t take up much of Larson’s schedule, so it is possible she could fit both projects in. After all, many actors filming the Avengers sequel also have other films lined up, so it is possible to juggle multiple films. Yet, Larson, not having officially joined the upcoming MCU films cast, raises some concerns.
