Broken Arrow residents excited as new film highlights city on the map

TULSA, OKLA. (KTUL) — With a new movie set to begin filming in Broken Arrow, we spoke with the Broken Arrow Tourism Director about the impact this will have on the city and with residents about their excitement and hopes for the growing film industry here in Green Country.

“We’re expecting that this movie will come in and they’ll spend $400,000 immediately in town,” said Makala Barton, the Tourism Manager for the City of Broken Arrow, about the movie Horrified starring Ron Perlman and Busy Phillips.

The shoot is set to begin at the Stoney Creek Hotel in a couple of weeks, and officials are noting the economic impact this will have on the city and local businesses.

“People need to realize there’s a multiplier effect to that. So all of those businesses then go out and spend money. So the ultimate economic impact of this film is estimated to be $800,000 to a million dollars,” said Barton.

According to IMDB, the movie is about a down-on-her-luck scream queen who begrudgingly attends a horror convention only to find herself in a real-life slasher.

Residents shared their excitement with us after hearing news about the project.

“I think it’s really cool that it’s putting B.A. on the map,” said Jaylyn Hammond, a Broken Arrow resident.

“Yeah, I would agree. I just think it’s really cool because whenever I tell people I’m from Broken Arrow, they’re like, Where? So, I think if we have a movie that’s being filmed here, it’s going to be like, oh, you’re from Broken Arrow,” said Lexi Gardner, another Broken Arrow resident.

The film’s producer said in a Visit Broken Arrow meeting earlier this month that they plan to film in Broken Arrow for four weeks.

The production company is utilizing a film rebate from the city of no more than $59,000, which is coming from Broken Arrow’s film incentive program that the city council approved and allocated $100,000 to in February.

“We approved up to $59,000 based on what they said their spend was going to be, which was about $400,000. But they don’t get it until they come back and show us the receipts and say, ‘Yes, we spent all this money in Broken Arrow,'” said Barton.

This means the city still has another $41,000 in film rebates that companies can apply for.

“I think that would be great for our local businesses here. We have a lot of great local businesses that are doing amazing things, especially down here in downtown. And so I love the idea that we could be bringing some more visitors to our city,” said Jillian Zavacky, a Broken Arrow resident.
