Bryce Dallas Howard Knew Her Films Like ‘Argylle’ Would Become Box Office Flops

Actors are more than willing to speak about their box office hits, but it is a bit rarer for them to discuss their box office bombs. Most want to sweep them under the rug and never speak of them again, but actress Bryce Dallas Howard is offering up something a little refreshing. Not only is she speaking about some of her box office misfortunes, she’s also being honest about seeing them coming from a mile away.

During a recent chat with The Independent, Howard spoke about some of her box office flops, most notably Argylle, and she said, “You can always see it coming while you’re making it.” She then went on to elaborate about not being “shocked” by it by saying, “I’ve never been shocked when something doesn’t work. But I’m just an actor, you’re there to serve a director’s vision. If a movie doesn’t turn out the way that you envisioned, you can barely feel disappointed because it’s not yours. You’re not the person who’s building the thing.”

Bryce Dallas Howard’s Outlook on Flops Doesn’t Run In the Family

While Bryce Dallas Howard’s outlook on bombs is refreshing, the same can’t be said for her father, Ron Howard, another famous director, who tends to take them a bit harder. The actress said she has seen her father break down when one of his films didn’t succeed. She went on to say, “It blows him away that I don’t do that.” During the chat, she revealed something that director Clint Eastwood said to her father when his 1992 romance film Far and Away, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, didn’t light up the box office.

“He said, ‘Ronnie, a career is like a season of television. You’ve got 24 episodes, some of the episodes are going to be bad, some are going to be serviceable, maybe a little forgettable, and maybe five of those episodes are going to be really strong and last.”

2024’s Most Stylish Action Movie Was a Box Office Flop

Despite its flashy style, Argylle was among the biggest box office action movie bombs in 2024.

Despite the actress appearing in three Jurassic World films that topped $1 billion worldwide, she is no stranger to box office flops. Argylle was a truly expensive misfire that cost a reported $200 million to produce and went on to gross only $96 million worldwide. Another flop frequently brought up from her filmography is 2006’s Lady in the Water, directed by M. Night Shyamalan during what some might call his creative slump. The film received largely negative reviews from critics and grossed a mere $72.8 million worldwide on a $70 million budget. It is great to see that, despite having some films that didn’t work, Dallas Howard has the right outlook on the matter.
