Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday said that the Delhi budget would focus on women empowerment, water and electricity supply, pollution, cleaning the Yamuna, and improving education, health services, and infrastructure.

The Delhi Assembly’s budget session is scheduled to begin on March 24, with the tabling of the 2025 Delhi Economic Survey. The budget, expected to be presented on March 25, will be the first of the Bharatiya Janata Party government led by Ms. Gupta, which came to power in the city last month.

The budget is likely to include outlays for various schemes promised by the BJP ahead of the election, including ₹2,500 per month for women beneficiaries and LPG cylinders at ₹500 for poor families.

However, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the primary Opposition party, cornered the ruling BJP, alleging that the women aid scheme, or ‘Mahila Samriddhi Yojana,’ was a jumla (empty rhetoric) as the government has not even begun registration for the scheme.

Ms Gupta, who also holds the finance portfolio, has been holding pre-budget consultations with various stakeholders, including women, farmers, slum dwellers and traders, for the past few days.

The CM said the ‘Viksit’ (developed) Delhi budget will be a “people’s budget” as her government has received around 10,000 suggestions – over 3,303 through e-mail and 6,982 via WhatsApp message – from Delhi’s residents.

“In this budget, we will include empowerment of women, smooth supply of electricity and water, solving water logging, controlling air pollution, cleaning Yamuna, improving education, health facilities, infrastructure and employment opportunities,” she said.

Ms. Gupta said that her government is working to fulfil Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of making Delhi a developed city.

‘Women betrayed’

AAP held demonstrations in different parts of the national capital against the BJP government for “failing” to fulfil electoral promises.

“The Prime Minister had assured that every woman in Delhi would start receiving ₹2,500 per month from March 8. Delhi’s women are still waiting. AAP has given women cheques from the ‘Bank of Jumla’ with ₹2,500 written on them. We are handing out these cheques to remind the BJP of its promise,” said Saurabh Bharadwaj, the Delhi AAP chief.
