Cabinet Approves India Bids for Commonwealth Games 2030 in Ahmedabad
In a landmark decision, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved India’s bid to host the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2030 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
The approval, announced on August 27, 2025, by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), also includes signing the Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA) and providing necessary guarantees and grant-in-aid to the Gujarat government if the bid is successful.
Ahmedabad, a city with a vibrant sporting culture, is poised to showcase its world-class infrastructure, headlined by the Narendra Modi Stadium—the largest stadium globally—which successfully hosted the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final. The city’s cutting-edge training facilities and passionate fanbase make it an ideal host for the prestigious event, expected to draw athletes, coaches, officials, tourists, and media from 72 countries.
The CWG 2030 is set to be more than a sporting spectacle. It promises to boost India’s economy by generating jobs, enhancing tourism, and creating opportunities in fields like sports science, event management, logistics, media, IT, and public relations. Local businesses are expected to thrive with the influx of international visitors, contributing to significant revenue generation.
Beyond economics, hosting the Games will foster national pride and unity, offering a shared experience that inspires millions. The event is expected to encourage a new generation of athletes to pursue sports as a career and promote greater participation at all levels, solidifying India’s position as a global sports hub.
The decision reflects India’s ambition to cement its place on the world stage, leveraging Ahmedabad’s proven capabilities and Gujarat’s organisational prowess. If successful, the CWG 2030 will leave a lasting legacy, inspiring young athletes and showcasing India’s ability to host global events with excellence.
