Cabinet approves India’s bid to host Commonwealth Games 2030

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved the proposal by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports to submit a bid to host the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2030.

The Cabinet also sanctioned the signing of the Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA), along with the required guarantees from concerned ministries, departments, and authorities. Additionally, it approved the grant-in-aid to the Gujarat government, which will be applicable if India’s bid is successful.

Athletes from 72 countries are expected to participate in the Games, along with coaches, technical officials, media personnel, and tourists. The event is expected to benefit local businesses and generate significant revenue.

Ahmedabad has been highlighted as an ideal host city, offering world-class stadiums, advanced training facilities, and a passionate sporting culture. The Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest, has already demonstrated its capability by successfully hosting the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final.

A team of officials from Commonwealth Sport, led by Director of Games Darren Hall, recently visited Ahmedabad to inspect the proposed venues and meet representatives of the Gujarat government. A larger delegation is expected to visit India soon.

The Cabinet noted that beyond sports, hosting the CWG would have a lasting impact by boosting tourism, creating jobs, and inspiring millions of young athletes. It would also generate professional opportunities across sports science, event operations and management, logistics, transport coordination, broadcasting and media, IT and communications, public relations, and other sectors.

Earlier, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) approved the bid during its Special General Meeting held on August 13 in New Delhi. The IOA had already submitted an Expression of Interest and now has until August 31 to submit the final bid proposal.

Apart from India, Nigeria and two other countries have reportedly expressed interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The final host nation will be decided by the General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport in the last week of November in Glasgow.

India previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010, staging the event in New Delhi.
