Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit India in February for an AI summit and talks with Narendra Modi aimed at reviving stalled trade negotiations.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit New Delhi in February to attend an artificial intelligence summit and hold bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The trip is expected to serve as a step toward mending strained diplomatic and economic relations.

According to The Globe and Mail, the visit could reopen negotiations on a comprehensive economic partnership agreement and a free trade pact that stalled under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government. Both sides have signaled renewed interest in restoring momentum on trade cooperation.

Dinesh Patnaik, India’s High Commissioner to Canada, said both governments are making a “sincere effort” to rebuild trust and shift focus toward growing bilateral investment. He noted that a successful agreement could push annual trade volumes above 50 billion US dollars.

Patnaik added that high-level talks resumed earlier this year to address security concerns and pave the way for economic expansion. Officials in both capitals see improved commercial ties as a stabilising factor in a tense geopolitical environment.

India has expressed readiness to increase investment in Canada’s energy sector and critical minerals important to high-tech industries. However, Patnaik said Ottawa must establish clear and transparent rules on foreign investment, environmental standards, and Indigenous rights.

Diplomats believe Carney’s visit will provide a crucial test for resetting relations after months of friction, including allegations and diplomatic expulsions that disrupted dialogue. A visible thaw could revive business confidence and offer strategic benefits to both countries.

Analysts say the planned summit will give leaders a platform to highlight collaboration in advanced technology while quietly addressing political sensitivities. The success of the trip may determine how quickly India and Canada can transition from cautious engagement to deeper economic integration.
