Captain America 4 Loses Top Spot at Box Office to Robert Pattinson’s New Movie
Captain America: Brave New World is a superhero action flick, inspired by Marvel Comics, starring Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford. Mickey 17 is a science fiction black comedy, partially based on the Edward Ashton novel Mickey 7, starring Robert Pattinson and Mark Ruffalo.
Both films have received praise for their respective achievements; one has been called “the best Marvel movie in years” and the other noted for being a “powerful and hilarious sci-fi satire.” But only one of these two blockbuster films leads at the box office, and it’s not the one with the backing of a massive fanbase over a decade in the making behind it. According to a report by Entertainment Weekly, Mickey 17 opened to a $19 million domestic – firmly dethroning the latest entry in the MCU. Globally, it made $53 million, a good number for a non-franchise film. It still has a way to go to make up for its $118 million budget, however.

The Fall of Marvel to Bong Joon Ho’s First Film In Six Years
Until recently, Captain America 4 has been dominating at the box office, with the movie having earned $167 million domestically since its Valentine’s Day release. This is bread crumbs to its worldwide earnings, which stand around $345 million. Despite some less than stellar reviews from critics overall, fans love the first film outing of Sam Wilson with the Shield. According to Rotten Tomatoes, they love it more than the original Cap movie, Captain America: The First Avenger.
Why Both Films Have Performed to Their Respective Levels
Whilst it’s still a far cry off the mark of the production budget of $118 million, Mickey 17’s opening is a great start and surprising – though EW suggests the reason for the great turnout being the originality of the concept of the film, the previous success of Bong and the popularity of Robert Pattinson (which will have grown considerably since becoming the star of 2023’s The Batman).
Though Pattinson’s iteration of The Dark Knight under Matt Reeves was, by far, a higher earning on its opening that is to be expected given how popular Batman is due to his comic books, movies and video games. It is likely Captain America 4 didn’t have a higher box office earning when it opened in part due to mixed early reviews from critics.
Though both films are competing to stay number 1 at the box office, both films have clearly been enjoyed by audiences. Both Captain America: Brave New World and Mickey 17 are showing in cinemas now.
