Cast of Roger Corman’s Scrapped 1994 ‘Fantastic Four’ Movie Cameo in Clip From MCU’s ‘First Steps’
In the history of The Fantastic Four on screen, there is one iteration of Marvel’s First Family that has been incredibly hard done by over the last 30 years. While everyone remembers the disaster that was the 2015 movie, and the “of-the-time” successful venture a decade earlier, Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps is giving the stars of the long-lost Roger Corman-produced version a moment in the spotlight thanks to some very deep-cut cameos in a newly released clip.

‘The Fantastic Four’s Expected Global Box Office Will Seal the Fate of the MCU’s Future This Weekend
‘Superman’ is about to lose his place at the top of the box office chart, but how high will ‘The Fantastic Four’ soar?
As seen in the newly released clip featuring five minutes of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the stars of that movie, Alex Hyde-White (Reed Richards), Jay Underwood (Johnny Storm), Michael Bailey Smith (Ben Grimm), and Rebecca Staab (Sue Storm), all make small appearances, which is surely a Galactus-sized thing for the four stars after the many years since they played the first on-screen iteration of the main cast.
The clip itself includes many moments that have already been seen interspersed throughout the trailers, but more notably also includes mention of John Malkovich’s Red Ghost. While the clip still name-checks the character, and sees one of Red Ghost’s Super-Apes being taken down, Malkovich is notably absent after being cut from the final movie.
Why Was John Malkovich Cut from ‘Fantastic Four’?
Lionsgate
It is currently still unclear exactly why Malkovich’s Red Ghost was cut from the final movie, other than potentially being an unnecessary distraction in the grander scheme of things. I mean, who wants to see someone like Malkovich playing a Marvel character who is going to appear in one scene and then never be seen again? Perhaps the plan is to keep him for another project where he can actually have a decent amount of screen time.
It was previously confirmed that Malkovich had been cut from the film, but for director Matt Shakman, the story needed to always be about the four main characters and what was best for the film. He said:
“There were a lot of things that ultimately ended up hitting the cutting room floor. When we were building a ’60s retro-future world, introducing all of these villains, introducing these four main characters as a group, as well as individually, introducing the idea of a child — there was a lot of stuff to balance in this movie and some things had to go ultimately in terms of shaping the film for its final version. It was heartbreaking not to include [John Malkovich] in the final version of the movie because he’s one of my very favorite humans and one of my biggest inspirations. As a person who walks the line between theater and film and television, there’s no one who is more inspiring than the founder of Steppenwolf Theater Company. What he’s done on stage as an actor and what he’s done as a director in theater as well as in film, and as just a film actor of incredible ability — I was honored he came to play.”
While Malkovich is out, the original Fantastic Four’s cameo being in is a nice little Easter egg that would only make sense in this movie. For Malkovich, maybe we will get to see his scenes in the deleted scenes, or perhaps he will simply appear in a different project somewhere down the line.
