Celtic ‘Hold Talks’ in Last 24 Hours to Sign ‘Exciting’ New Forward
Celtic are thought to be ramping up their efforts to sign Danish star Jakob Breum in the remaining days of the transfer window, according to reports – with the Hoops needing signings through the door to enjoy success on the European stage after falling short in recent days.
The report by Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph on X (formerly Twitter) states that Celtic are ramping up their pursuit of Go Ahead Eagles midfielder Breum, with ‘fresh talks’ having taken place today over a potential move for the Denmark international.
Report: Celtic ‘Increasing Efforts’ to Sign Jakob Breum
Breum, 21, can play on both wings, and has impressed at the Deventer-based club ever since his move in the summer of 2023. 10 goals in just 26 Eredivisie outings last summer saw them finish seventh in the table, racking up 14 wins from just 34 games – but more importantly, they won the Dutch Cup, beating huge clubs such as FC Twente, PSV Eindhoven and AZ Alkmaar on route to the trophy hoist – their first major honour in almost 100 years.
It’s thought that Go Ahead Eagles will look for a minimum of £5million for the ‘exciting’ winger’s services, having previously stood firm on their valuation of the Dane earlier in the window after Celtic had an offer of £2.6million rejected back in July, according to Joseph.
The Hoops have already lost Nicolas Kuhn to Serie A club Como earlier in the transfer window, as well as loaning out wide man Luis Palma to Polish side Lech Poznan, and with Jota picking up a long-term knee injury, recruits are needed.
Benjamin Nygren has joined from Nordsjaelland, whilst Japanese star Shin Yamada has joined from Japanese side Kawasaki Frontale – but Breum would offer some form of European experience, which would be beneficial for Brendan Rodgers.
The OB academy graduate has yet to appear for the Denmark national team, but moving to Celtic and competing in Champions League football regularly will certainly change those chances going forward.
Celtic are expected to win the Scottish Premiership after Rangers’ poor start to life in the domestic campaign, but European progression may be tough to come by after a below-par 0-0 draw with Kazakh side Kairat Almaty on Wednesday, which sees them head into the second leg in the Middle East needing a win, to fire themselves into the league phase of the tournament if they are to reap the rewards of the financial windfall that comes from playing in the competition.
