Chad Michael Murray Reveals Creepy Backstory Imagined for Freakier Friday Character Since Original Film
More than two decades after portraying Jake in 2003’s Freaky Friday, Chad Michael Murray, who has starred in shows like One Tree Hill and Sullivan’s Crossing, is back in the role again for this summer’s Freakier Friday. The movie will reunite Murray’s Jake with Lindsay Lohan’s Anna Coleman and Jamie Lee Curtis’ Tess Coleman.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Murray talked about reprising his Jake role and the nostalgia it brought along with it. In the 2003 film, Murray played the motorcycle-riding love interest of teenage Anna (Lohan). Now, 22 years later, he talked about how he wanted to make sure everything was perfect as he stepped into the role once again, including his iconic hair.
“The hair had been locked in place for the entire day. I was trying to let it be free and let it loose, to get the helmet and to do the whole thing, so it was like bedhead in the morning,” said Murray of shooting a scene in the Hollywood streets. His Jake character now owns a record store, but he still rides his motorcycle everywhere he goes.

Nisha Ganatra wanted to remove one problematic aspect from the Freaky Friday franchise.
Back in “Jake’s World”
Murray said it felt good playing the role of Jake again, but said, “There was a lot of conversation for everything that was in Jake’s world” from the first movie. “He was this kind of liquid thing when we first started, and we were trying to mold it,” he says of his character. In Freaky Friday, Murray’s Jake character spent the first part of the movie as the romantic interest of Anna, but after a spell caused Anna to switch bodies with her mother, Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis), Jake started to have a crush on Tess.
In the sequel, directed by Nisha Ganatra, Jake once again finds himself at the center of the story in a plot devised by Anna’s teenage daughter, Harper, and her stepsister-to-be Lily, who switch souls with Anna and Tess, respectively. Murray said he took a comedic approach with the role in the sequel.
“When I was asked the question, ‘Where has he been?’ I always thought Jake had a room somewhere, in the closet of his house, where he’s got this wonderful Tess shrine, and he’s been in love with her, and he keeps a faded photo of her in his wallet, but he still loves it and opens it from time to time and touches it,” Murray said of his character. “That was all part of the backstory that was going along with who Jake is in this fantasy world that he’s put himself in,” he added.

Murray: Loahan “Owned” a Particular Scene
Murray recalled filming a scene in Freakier Friday in which Lohan created a vivid fantasy as her character attempts to seduce Jake in the record store. “There was so much creativity, and everybody just having fun. I loved watching Lindsay own it. It was like, Oh, there she is,” Murray said of the scene in which Lohan did a lot of improvising. “There was just a real moment for all of us. Just the moment of Jake and the bike and pulling up, you could just see the 23-years-ago version of all of us that knew the film, come to life,” he said.
Freakier Friday hits theaters on August 8.
