Leave it to Chanel to turn Berlin’s industrial grandeur into something quietly transcendent.
To mark the start of Berlin Gallery Weekend, the Chanel Culture Fund hosted a dinner to celebrate “Embrace,” Klára Hosnedlová’s sweeping sculptural installation and the inaugural Chanel Commission. Set within the cavernous central hall of Hamburger Bahnhof, the meditative landscape—constructed of flax textiles, embroidery, cast glass, sandstone, clay, iron, and concrete slabs—transformed the 2,500-square-meter space into a meditation on the history and artisanal traditions of the Czech Republic (Hosnedlová’s home country). The exhibition marks the artist’s most ambitious institutional solo to date and signals a new chapter in Chanel’s commitment to championing boundary-pushing women artists through large-scale commissions.
Guests—including artists Nairy Baghramian and Katharina Grosse; collectors Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo and Julia Stoschek; Chanel’s Global Head of Arts & Culture Yana Peel; Art Basel Director Maike Cruse; Gallery Weekend Berlin’s Antonia Ruder; and Dirk Boll of Christie’s—settled themselves at a long table.
The sumptuous tablescape—nestled within the installation itself and set with porcelain by Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur, linens by Chiarastella Cattana, and glasses of Chanel’s own Domaine de l’Île Blanc 2023—paid lavish homage to spring. A feverish arrangement of fresh pink and purple blooms by Berlin’s Anatomie Fleur wound their way down its center, while place settings inscribed with calligraphy by Betty Soldi added an intimate touch.
As the evening unfolded, the French house’s Berlin Gallery Weekend kickoff cemented itself in the imaginations of those present as an unforgettable tribute to the transformative power of gathering in the presence of art.
