Chapter Music Release Deluxe Reissue Of Post-Punk Compilation

Chapter Music have shared one of their final releases before their impending closure: A deluxe reissue of the compilation Can’t Stop It!: Australian Post-Punk 1978-82. As its title suggests, the compilation brings together a definitive retrospective on the first wave of antipodean post-punk in the wake of bands like Gang Of Four, Joy Division and Siouxsie & The Banshees arriving in the UK.

The independent Perth-born label originally released Can’t Stop It! on CD back in 2001. Now, on the cusp of its 25th anniversary, the compilation has been expanded to include a further six songs that were not on the original release – as well as releasing it both on vinyl and digitally for the very first time. In a press statement for the release, the label said that Can’t Stop It! was a compilation that “documents a fantastically inventive and dynamic era, when Australian acts stepped out of the shadow of overseas influence and asserted their own musical identity for perhaps the first time.”

The statement goes on to note that, while none of the bands in the compilation were particularly successful from a commercial standpoint, members of the bands featured would go on to form some of the most memorable and iconic acts in Australian music history – including Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Dirty Three and The Go-Betweens. “Can’t Stop It! is a vivid survey of the creativity and innovation bubbling away under the surface of Australia’s largely unadventurous mainstream music culture of the time,” the statement continued.

Chapter Music, which was originally founded back in 1992, announced earlier this year that it would be partially shuttering. It will no longer be putting out new music, following the release of Teether & Kuya Neil‘s Yearn IV and the solo album of label head Guy Blackman. Rather, the label will enter semi-retirement and focus on “occasional re-issues, delving into the hidden histories of forgotten or underappreciated music” – such as this deluxe reissue of Can’t Stop It!, for example.

The label is the latest in a string of independent Australian labels and communities to fold over the course of the 2020s – including Courtney Barnett‘s Milk! Records, Spunk! Records and the Sydney hip-hop collective Elefant Traks. The latter two held farewell showcases in the Joan Sutherland Theatre of the Sydney Opera House for last year’s Vivid, while Chapter held an End Of An Era event as part of Rising‘s Day Tripper event in Melbourne over the long weekend. Among the acts that performed were Tenniscoats, Npcede, Andras & Oscar and Blackman himself.
