Charlton Athletic, Huddersfield Town to battle for Fleetwood’s Brendan Wiredu

Summary

  • Charlton and Huddersfield are interested in Fleetwood’s Wiredu.
  • Summer transfer window could be Wiredu’s ideal time to move.
  • Wiredu’s standout performances make him a target for a higher league.

According to reports by Alan Nixon on Sunday morning, both League One play-off hopefuls Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town have Fleetwood Town captain Brendan Wiredu on their radars.

The 25-year-old began his footballing career with the Addicks, before moving away to find regular first-team football. After now racking up nearly 200 senior appearances, Nixon has reported via his Patreon page that a return to The Valley could be on the cards.

Fellow League One powerhouse Huddersfield are also reportedly monitoring the Cods’ captain ahead of the summer transfer window, as both sides look to bring fresh blood into their defensive unit.

Fleetwood were able to retain their captain last summer and in January, which looked to be a huge coup for the club in their League Two campaign. Sadly, the Cod Army look set for another season in the fourth tier, as they sit nine points outside the play-offs with five matches remaining.

Wiredu penned a new contract with the Lancashire outfit in January 2024, which will keep him at the club until June 2026. However, when the summer window rolls around, the defender will have just 12 months remaining on his deal, which could see Fleetwood keen to cash in.

According to the latest reports from Nixon, interest in the 25-year-old this summer won’t be hard to come by, as League One duo Charlton and Huddersfield both have Wiredu on their radar.

The versatile defender has been a standout for his current club recently, and was reportedly checked by both the Terriers and the Addicks last week.

Summer might be the right time for BrendanWiredu to leave Fleetwood Town

Fleetwood Town - Highbury Stadium

Wiredu is a much-loved player at Highbury Stadium, and an integral part of the dressing room on and off the pitch thanks to his role as club captain. If the defender departs the club, it will be a huge void to fill, but the summer could be the right time for the ex-Charlton man to take the next step in his career.

As mentioned, there’s been no shortage of interest in the Cod Army skipper in the last two transfer windows, as both Wycombe Wanderers and Wigan Athletic reportedly saw moves for his services fail in the last 12 months. It seems the upcoming transfer window will be no different, and with his contract running down, clubs may think they can get him for cheaper than they could’ve previously.

Despite once again being a standout player for the club, as he was in League One last term, Wiredu’s team look all but set for another season in League Two. Following a 4-0 home defeat to Swindon Town, any remaining hope of making a late charge towards the play-offs looks to be squashed.

With his standout performances this year, and now approaching the end of his contract at Highbury, the summer would present a good opportunity for the defender to make the return to League One, or potentially even the Championship. This is the next logical step in Wiredu’s career, so it’s understandable why Charlton and Huddersfield already have their eyes on the situation.
