Beijing, Nov. 7 (SANA) China expressed strong opposition on Saturday to US sanctions imposed on two Chinese companies, considering them unilateral measures that violate international law and harm the interests of Chinese companies and the stability of economic relations between the two countries.

A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce said Beijing opposes the sanctions announced by the US State Department on Nov. 5 on grounds related to Cuba, noting it is the first time the United States has targeted Chinese companies under these pretexts, according to Xinhua.

The sanctioned companies are China National Electronics Import & Export Corporation (CEIEC) and Beijing H&C Technologies Co. Ltd. Washington alleged the two firms supplied components and equipment to Cuba’s military through a Cuban procurement firm.

The spokesperson said Washington has recently intensified restrictions and discriminatory measures against China, considering that these steps contradict the understandings reached by the two countries’ presidents and negatively affect bilateral trade and economic relations.

Beijing called on the United States to reverse its decisions, affirming it reserves the right to take necessary measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies.

The sanctions come amid continued trade and economic tensions between the United States and China, with sanctions and trade restrictions increasingly used as tools of pressure in political and international files.

On Oct. 24, Beijing expressed firm opposition to a US Treasury proposal to expand and tighten restrictions on outbound investment in China, considering it a discriminatory measure and an overuse of the national security concept.
