Chunghwa Telecom, ITRI Pioneer 5G NR NTN Satellite Video Calls
Chunghwa Telecom, in collaboration with the Institute for Information Industry of the Industrial Technology Research Institute, has successfully completed the integration of the ST-2 high-orbit satellite and a 5G base station, becoming the first in the world to achieve end-to-end two-way video calls based on the 3GPP 5G NR NTN (New Radio for Non-Terrestrial Network) standard communication protocol.
The two parties collaborated to establish a 5G NR NTN verification field at Chunghwa Telecom’s Yangmingshan Satellite Station, combining the ST-2 high-orbit satellite, the NR NTN base station developed by the Industrial Technology Research Institute, the NR NTN mobile phone, and the satellite transponder of Chunghwa Telecom Research Institute. With extensive experience in mobile and satellite system technology, the team successfully overcame the challenges of high delay and signal attenuation in the Ku band of the 36,000-kilometer high-orbit satellite, completing end-to-end two-way satellite video calls and data transmission tests.
The results of this collaboration not only showcase the profound strength of Chunghwa Telecom in the integration of mobile and satellite systems but also benefit from its long-term participation in the 3GPP mobile communication standard organization and its accumulated expertise. In recent years, it has also served as the project leader for the 3GPP NR NTN Ku band (10.7-14.5GHz).
