Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu on October 25 inaugurated the refurbished Terminal 2 (T2) at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), which will become operational from Sunday (October 26).

Originally constructed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) around four decades ago, T2 was temporarily closed in April this year to undergo extensive renovation works. The upgraded terminal now boasts an annual capacity of 15 million passengers, enhancing the airport’s overall efficiency and comfort level.

IGIA, the largest airport in India, comprises three terminals (T1, T2 and T3) and four runways, managing over 1,300 flight movements daily.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, Chief Executive Officer of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), said the airport’s total annual passenger handling capacity now exceeds 100 million.

DIAL, a consortium led by GMR Group, operates and manages IGIA under a public-private partnership model.

On March 20, DIAL announced that the expanded Terminal 1 (T1) can now handle 40 million passengers annually, while Terminal 3 (T3) is equipped to accommodate 45 million passengers per year.

The revamped T2 at has been developed as a future-ready facility, integrating advanced systems and automation to create a smoother and more efficient travel experience. The terminal introduces a Self-Baggage Drop facility for the first time, allowing passengers to check in their luggage independently, thereby reducing queues and saving time during departure.

Six newly installed Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBBs) ensure quicker and safer aircraft handling. These bridges come with adjustable platforms to improve accessibility for passengers boarding or disembarking. The terminal’s smart design also features swing doors on the boarding bridges that open like conventional hinged doors, replacing the older sliding mechanism, while side-covering cushions along the bridges enhance both safety and aesthetics.

Adding to the convenience, a state-of-the-art Virtual Information Desk has been introduced, enabling travellers to access live flight details, find their way to boarding gates, explore airport outlets and services, chat with a virtual support assistant, and even generate Wi-Fi coupons—all through a single interactive digital platform.

Overall, the modernised T2 blends technology, comfort, and design innovation to deliver a smarter, faster, and more passenger-centric airport experience.
