Clairo Signs Atlantic Records Deal
Clairo has secured a major new record deal with Atlantic Records, marking a significant shift in the singer-songwriter’s career trajectory.
Claire Cottrill, known professionally as Clairo, announced the signing in a statement expressing her enthusiasm for the partnership.
“I’m so thrilled to begin this next chapter of my musical journey with Atlantic,” Cottrill said (as per Rolling Stone). “From our first meeting, they immediately understood my vision, and it feels good to know I can continue to be as expressive and free with my ideas with a great new partner by my side.”
The Atlantic Records deal represents a notable evolution for the artist who has navigated different label relationships throughout her career. Cottrill previously worked with independent label Fader for her 2017 debut Immunity, followed by a joint release through Fader and Republic Records for 2021’s Sling. Her most recent effort, Charm, was entirely self-released.
The signing comes at a particularly successful period for Clairo, with Charm earning her first Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. The record generated substantial streaming numbers, with singles “Juna” and “Sexy to Someone” accumulating hundreds of millions of plays across platforms.
Cottrill’s career began with the bedroom-pop track “Pretty Girl” in 2017, which gained viral momentum on YouTube while she was studying at Syracuse University. The unexpected success led to immediate interest from major labels, though she ultimately chose to sign with the independent Fader label at the time.
The early career choice sparked controversy, with some online commenters labelling Cottrill an “industry plant” due to her father’s marketing background and existing relationship with Fader founder Jon Cohen. Cottrill has previously addressed these accusations directly, acknowledging her privileged position while defending her artistic authenticity.
“I definitely am not blind to the fact that things have been easier for me than other people’s experiences,” she explained in a 2021 interview. “It would be stupid of me to not acknowledge the privilege I had from the start to be able to sign somewhere where there’s trust, to be able to sign a record deal that doesn’t revolve around keeping myself afloat financially.”
The Atlantic Records partnership suggests potential new music on the horizon, though specific details about upcoming releases remain unannounced.
Clairo is scheduled to perform at All Things Go festival with dates in Washington, D.C. on September 27th and Queens, New York on September 28th.
