CN to invest $290M in Saskatchewan to boost rail capacity and support sustainable growth

Canadian National Railway Co. says it plans to invest approximately $290 million in Saskatchewan this year as part of its 2025 capital investment program, with a focus on infrastructure upgrades to support agriculture and enhance long-term supply chain reliability.

The Montreal-based company said Monday that the funding will go toward track maintenance and strategic projects aimed at improving the movement of grain, fertilizer and other key goods across the province.

“We believe that investing in our network is about building for the future,” CN president and CEO Tracy Robinson said in a release. “Our continued infrastructure investment in Saskatchewan will help strengthen the resiliency and efficiency of our network.”

The provincial government welcomed the announcement, emphasizing Saskatchewan’s dependence on rail for international trade.

“Rail transportation is an essential part of getting Saskatchewan’s food, fuel and fertilizer to more than 160 countries around the globe,” said Highways Minister David Marit. “This investment will help our robust transportation network continue to meet the needs of Saskatchewan producers, while supporting our export-based economy.”

CN said the investment will fund a range of projects across the province, including continued work on track maintenance, capacity upgrades and improvements at critical sites such as the Melville railyard.

In 2024, CN invested roughly $160 million in Saskatchewan, which included more than $6.7 million in grade crossing upgrades and over $3 million in enhancements to its Melville operations.

According to CN, the company employs more than 1,150 people in Saskatchewan and operates 1,845 miles of railroad across the province. In 2024, CN says it paid $105 million in cash taxes in Saskatchewan and spent $117 million on local procurement.

The railway says it is committed to sustainability and community development, noting it contributed $670,000 in community investments in the province last year.

CN transports more than 300 million tonnes of goods annually across a nearly 20,000-mile rail network that links Canada’s east and west coasts with the U.S. Midwest and Gulf Coast.
