Coach Hewitt getting inducted into the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame
His efforts as a player and a builder have not gone unnoticed.
Dale Hewitt’s long history as a player and a dedicated coach has helped earn him a spot in the North Bay and Area Sports Hall of Fame.
Hewitt grew up in North Bay playing hockey in the winter and baseball in the summer.
Moving on to Ecole Secondaire Algonquin, his passion for sport not only grew, but saw him shine in his number one love: hockey. While at Algonquin, Dale was the top scorer for two seasons and led the league in scoring in 1976 and was subsequently named league MVP that year.
Colby College, in Maine, took note of his accomplishments and abilities and afforded him a full scholarship. While at Colby, he combined academic excellence with a stellar four-year hockey career, amassing 100 points in 86 games over the four years despite missing part of his sophomore year due to injury.
Upon graduation, he returned to North Bay and began a teaching career that spanned 30+ years. During that time, he coached 58 teams covering seven different sports.
Of those teams, 26 were hockey, where his teams won three NDA titles and one NOSSA title. While coaching, Dale also found time to serve as NDA hockey convenor for several years, as well as serving in the same position as North Bay hosted a variety of NOSSA events.
As his two boys became involved in minor hockey, so did his commitment, thus adding to his coaching duties as he coached numerous teams at the minor hockey level, having achieved two NOHA championships.
His efforts as a player and a builder have not gone unnoticed, as he was awarded the OFSAA Leadership Award in 2003-04 and is a past recipient of the Judge Harry J. Reynolds award for contribution to hockey. While at Colby, he was named to the All-Maine All-Star team in 78-79.
In many circumstances, the contributions made by people such as Dale Hewitt go unnoticed, but if one were to talk to his peers and the numerous young athletes that have crossed his path, one would find a great appreciation for his dedication to the growth and development of young people through sport.
“As a builder and athlete, Dale Hewitt is welcomed into the North Bay and Area Sports Hall of Fame and will be inducted at the 44th Annual North Bay Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Dinner on Saturday, May 3rd at the Davedi Club,” a release stated.
