Colchester Independent Short Film Festival this weekend
The Colchester Independent Short Film Festival will take place at Curzon Cinema, in Queen Street, on Saturday from 6pm until 9pm.
It will include a special focus on 11 films made by youngsters which explore their personal experiences of being a teenager.
The festival’s young filmmakers category is being sponsored by the Anglian Community Trust (ACT) and it is called ACT’s Young lives.
There will also be 22 other short films shown at the festival which range from fantasy, documentaries, and fictional stories about the lives of people from diverse backgrounds, such as the LGBTQ+ community and ethnic minorities.
Nick Pelas, director of the Colchester Independent Short Film Festival, said: “I think encouraging them to make these films is good for developing their skills in the film industry.
“It’s also beneficial for their wellbeing if it helps them to process some of the challenges and traumas they have been through.

“They could also be award-winning directors in the future, just by having the chance to showcase their work at this level.”
The young filmmakers are aged between 16 to 18 and are currently studying film at the likes of the Sixth Form College and Colchester Institute.
The fifth instalment of the festival will also feature Q&As with the filmmakers, and will provide time for networking, so attendees can meet other film lovers.
Mr Pelas has said that 80 per cent of all films in the festival are from Essex filmmakers but there are some submissions from Canada, Iran and North Korea.
ACT chairman, Michael Pollington, said: “It’s important that the local health services fully understand the challenges and mental health struggles young people are going through.

“Helping these young people to get involved with an exciting film competition like this is a great example of how art can be so powerful with not only providing a unique form of therapy for young people but also raising awareness about what can be done to enhance their lives.”
Tickets cost £17.18.
