‘Confused’ AFN shifts World Championship trials to Yabatech Sports Complex
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has now announced the Yabatech Sports Complex in Lagos as the new venue for the 2025 World Championships trials.
The trials are scheduled to run from July 31 to August 2.
The federation had weeks ago announced Abeokuta, Ogun state as the venue of the trials.
Later on, the Federation contemplated changing the venue to either Asaba or Benin.
On a reverse, AFN has settled for Lagos, just three days before the start of the event.
The trials will serve as a compulsory selection event for athletes hoping to represent Nigeria at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
World record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, is already in Nigeria and was spotted training at the Yabatech facility last week alongside fellow hurdler Adaobi Tabugbo.
In the meantime, Nigeria’s relay teams are still seeking qualification for Tokyo after missing the World Relays in May. They must now qualify by ranking among the top teams globally before the August 24 deadline.
