Conor McManus interview: ‘There’s a lot worse things going on in the world than somebody stepping away from county football’

The hip problems that plagued Monaghan star in recent years made retirement an easy decision

Lunch time at the Four Seasons Hotel on the edge of Monaghan town. It’s midweek and a couple of older men want to know what Conor McManus thinks of the county’s start to the new league season. Monaghan need, they all agree, to take care of their home games if they’re to bounce straight back up to the top division.

There are nods and smiles and second glances from other customers. One leans in to say he saw him on TV recently. Monaghan people are, McManus says, “wired on football”. The presence of their most famous son wasn’t going to pass without notice.
