Constructive China-U.S. talks on finding solutions to tariffs

Li Chenggang, China’s International Trade Representative at the Ministry of Commerce and Vice Minister of Commerce, said on Sunday that China and the United States have reached fundamental agreements to properly address a number of significant economic and trade issues concerning each country, which will be subject to the respective domestic approval procedures of both nations.
According to China’s Xinhua News Agency, Li stated at a press conference held following the latest round of China-U.S. economic and trade talks in the Malaysian capital, that over the past month or so, economic and trade relations between China and the United States experienced some disruptions and fluctuations, attracting global attention.
He added that since the China-U.S. economic and trade talks in Geneva in May, China has strictly adhered to the agreements reached during several telephone calls between the two heads of state, earnestly and seriously implemented the outcomes of the economic and trade discussions, and carefully maintained the relatively stable China-U.S. economic and trade cooperation, which had been hard-won. He noted that China does not wish to see such disruptions and fluctuations.
He further noted that over the past two days, the economic and trade teams from China and the United States in Kuala Lumpur conducted in-depth and candid discussions on issues including U.S. Section 301 measures related to the maritime sector, as well as China’s logistics and shipbuilding sectors, the extension of the suspension of mutual tariffs, cooperation on fentanyl-related tariffs and anti-drug measures, trade expansion, and export controls.
Li explained that both sides held constructive discussions on finding solutions to properly address each other’s concerns and reached fundamental agreements. He added that the U.S. side expressed its position sharply, while the Chinese side remained firm in protecting its interests.
