Coolie: After 2.0, Rajinikanth And Lokesh Kanagaraj Film Aims For Second-Widest Tamil Release In North India

Lokesh Kanagaraj’s upcoming venture Coolie, featuring an ensemble cast including Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Aamir Khan, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, and others, is all set to hit theatres on August 14. The movie’s North American premieres begin a day earlier on August 13. The buzz surrounding Coolie isn’t limited to South India; the much-awaited film is generating considerable hype in North India as well. Its North India distribution is being handled by Pen Marudhar, and as per a recent update, the giant is aiming to give Coolie the second widest release ever for a Tamil film in the Hindi belt, only behind Rajinikanth’s own 2.0.

Can Coolie Replicate the 2.0 Phenomenon in the Hindi Market?

While Coolie is aiming big, matching the release scale of 2.0 poses several challenges. Notably, 2.0 was a solo release, while Coolie will clash with YRF’s War 2, touted as Bollywood’s biggest release of the year. 2.0 was a sequel to the widely loved Robot (Enthiran), which had an established fanbase in the Hindi-speaking regions. The presence of Akshay Kumar in a major role gave 2.0 a clear advantage with Hindi audiences. While Coolie does feature Aamir Khan, his role is expected to be more limited, which may not be enough to pull in neutral Hindi viewers purely based on his name.

Additionally, holdover titles are still performing strongly, especially Mahavatar Narsimha, an animated epic backed by Hombale Films, which continues to draw audiences into its fourth week.

Despite fierce competition, Rajinikanth’s Coolie eyes wide Hindi belt release

According to a report in Pinkvilla, despite stiff competition from War 2 and ongoing successful films, Coolie is targeting a screen count of over 1,000 across the Hindi belt, an ambitious goal, though final numbers are yet to be confirmed. Discussions and screen bookings are currently underway.

Both Pen Marudhar and YRF are seasoned, aggressive distributors, and the screen allocation battle is expected to be intense. However, in the end, word of mouth will play the decisive role.

Interestingly, recent examples like Saiyaara and Mahavatar Narsimha have shown that even films opening with fewer screens can expand significantly based on strong audience reception. If Coolie manages to strike a chord, it could very well grow into a nationwide success, screen count or not.
