Coolie Director Lokesh Kanagaraj Reveals Why Kamal Haasan Shouldn’t Be A Part Of Rajinikanth Film: Because It Was…

Thalaivar Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Coolie is shaping up to be one of the most eagerly awaited big-banner releases. This film is also one of the most ambitious projects helmed by renowned director Lokesh Kanagaraj, who has earned praise for his storytelling and cinematic universes. In a recent interview, Lokesh opened up about various aspects of the film, including whether Coolie is part of his established Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU) and if Kamal Haasan could have fit into the movie.

Lokesh Kanagaraj reveals if Coolie is part of LCU

In his recent interview with film critic Bharadwaj Rangan, Lokesh addressed the question of whether Coolie is connected to the LCU. The director clarifies that, unlike his previous films, such as Kamal Haasan’s Vikram, which are interconnected within his cinematic world, Coolie stands apart as a completely standalone project.

Lokesh shared, “This is another standalone film which has nothing to do with my universe.” This clears up any confusion or speculation among fans about Coolie being linked to the ongoing narrative threads found in his other works.

Lokesh Kanagraj on why Kamal Haasan shouldn’t be a part of Coolie

When asked if he had ever considered casting Kamal Haasan in Coolie, Lokesh Kanagaraj was clear that this was never part of his plan. He said that throughout the film’s production, there was no intention to bring Kamal Haasan on board for this particular project. That said, Lokesh expressed his deep admiration for both Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. He confessed that if an opportunity arose for the two legendary actors to collaborate, he would be more than willing to humble himself to make it happen.

But he pointed out that the roles in Coolie and Vikram were specifically written for each actor’s unique style and persona. He shared, “What’s clear to me is why Rajni sir shouldn’t do Vikram and Kamal sir shouldn’t do Coolie. Because it was written for both of them. It wasn’t like they were the only ones who didn’t want anyone else doing anything apart from these two. So that wouldn’t be fair.”
