Credit card spending touches all-time high of ₹1.93 lakh crore in July: RBI

Credit card spending in India reached an all-time high of ₹1.93 lakh crore in July 2025, according to the latest data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The spending rose 6% from ₹1.83 lakh crore in June and 12% from ₹1.72 lakh crore in July 2024.

Point-of-sale (POS) transactions through credit cards stood at ₹70,380 crore in July, marking a 4.3% rise over the previous month. Other card-based transactions increased 6.7% month-on-month to ₹1,23,469 crore.

RBI data showed that 4.26 lakh new credit cards were issued during the month, pushing the total number of cards in circulation to 11.16 crore. In comparison, 10.45 crore cards were in circulation in July 2024 and 10.98 crore in March 2025.

International transactions through credit cards amounted to ₹7,467 crore in July, down more than 9.5% from ₹8,251 crore in June. Debit card international transactions stood at ₹2,247 crore in July against ₹2,182 crore in the previous month.

Digital transactions via Unified Payments Interface (UPI) also continued to expand, touching ₹25 lakh crore in July, up 4% from ₹24.03 lakh crore in June.

The figure was ₹20.64 lakh crore in July 2024.

The RBI data further highlighted a rise in fraudulent transactions. The total value of such transactions increased to ₹440 crore in July, compared with ₹303 crore in June. This translated to one fraudulent case in every 81,444 transactions.
