KUSHIABILL, JULY 20 (MExN): A cultural workshop on Mech (Bodo) Kachari traditional songs and music was held at the Kushiabill Kachari Community Hall, jointly organised by the Late Mech Kachari School of Kachari Traditional Music and Gyanswrang Fwrai Shali, Kushiabill.

Held under the theme “Gwrlwi Denkhwni Swdwbfwrkhwo Bujinai” (Understanding Simple Terms of Music), the workshop brought together community elders, youth, and cultural leaders for a day of learning and intergenerational exchange.

The event was mentored by Gopen Mech, a noted figure in the preservation of Mech (Bodo) musical traditions. In his keynote address, Mech underscored the significance of traditional music as a carrier of identity and heritage.

“Traditional music is not just entertainment; it is our identity, our language, and our history. We must protect and pass it on,” he said.

Prominent attendees included Subash Mech, Head Gaonbura of Kushiabill; Phungkha Basumatary, Cultural Secretary of KTCN; and Uttam Brahma, community leader from Naharbari. Cultural pioneers from Gyanswrang Fwrai Shali also took part, recognised for their sustained efforts in promoting traditional Bodo music.

Over 40 participants, including children, youth and cultural enthusiasts, engaged in sessions on traditional instruments such as the kham (drum), sifung (flute) and serja (string instrument). The workshop included group singing, interactive discussions on song structure, rhythm, timing and musical scales. Elders played an active role in mentoring the youth, creating a bridge between generations.

The event concluded with group performances of Mech (Bodo) folk songs and a collective pledge to carry forward the community’s musical legacy.

Organisers stated that similar workshops will be conducted in other villages to further deepen cultural roots and promote youth involvement in Mech (Bodo) traditions.
