Daphne’s Flight to perform in Wetheral, Carlisle this May

The music group, made up of Chris While, Helen Watson, Julie Matthews, Melanie Harrold, and Miranda Sykes, will be performing at Wetheral Community Hall on May 1.

The group is known for its blend of folk, blues, and other genres.

Their combined talent has been likened to that of The Traveling Wilburys, Sweet Honey In The Rock, and the humour of The Derry Girls.

The group, which first performed together at the Cambridge Folk Festival 25 years ago, has been on a 20-year hiatus.

Now, they are back on tour with a new album, Favourable Light.

Each member of Daphne’s Flight has a background in the music industry.

Helen Watson’s music crosses the boundaries between blues, soul, jazz and folk.

She began performing on the folk circuit during the late sixties, and signed a recording contract with EMI in the mid-80s.

Her album, Blue Slipper, featured Little Feat’s Lowell George and Richie Hayward.

Chris While learned her craft in the folk clubs of Northern England and later joined The Albion Band in 1993.

She also became Fairport Convention’s go-to Sandy Denny stand-in and has toured with Julie Matthews and her daughter Kellie.

The Guardian wrote: “She rises from the ashes like an angel with a voice to match.”

Matthews, on the other hand, battled alcoholism, signed a publishing deal, and has written hundreds of songs both solo and as part of the longest-lasting female duo in Britain, Chris While and Julie Matthews.

She was a lone performer in her early years, travelling around Europe learning her craft as a singer, songwriter and entertainer.

Described by Folk Roots as “awesomely talented,” Matthews is a performer, songwriter and multi instrumentalist who plays the piano, guitar, bazouki, and Mandolin.

Melanie Harrold, who in her past life was known as Joanna Carlin, has recorded with Gerry Rafferty and performed as Irma Cetas with Hank Wangford.

She began her career singing in the folk clubs of the 70’s moving into musical theatre and television before making her first album.

In her early 40s, Harrold came off the road and trained as a Voice Movement Therapist.

She now travels the world teaching and leading workshops

Miranda Sykes took up the double bass at the age of eight and is the long-time bassist and vocalist with Show Of Hands.

She tours as a solo artist and with While and Matthews, Hannah Martin, and Jim Crawford.

Daphne’s Flight was originally formed for a one-off performance at the Cambridge Folk Festival.

The group then recorded an album and went on a tour the following year, in 1996.

After a 20-year break, the group is back, with a change in line-up, and is still driven by the impact music has on both the artist and the audience.

Despite their collective pedigree, the group remains relatively unknown in the mainstream.

Daphne’s Flight’s music features a variety of styles, which they combine on one record.

Fans can expect an evening of music and storytelling, as the women share their experiences through their songs.

The event at the Wetheral Community Hall is expected to be a memorable one, as Daphne’s Flight brings their blend of music and storytelling to the stage.
