D’Arcy Carden and Tony Hale spoke about starring in the new Angel Studios movie “Sketch,” which was directed by Seth Worley.

The synopsis is: When a young girl’s sketchbook falls into a strange pond, her drawings come to life—unpredictable, chaotic, and dangerously real.

As the town unravels, she and her brother must track down the creatures before they leave permanent damage.

Their father, racing to find them through the fallout, must navigate a town in crisis to reunite his family and stop the disaster they never meant to unleash.

Experience doing ‘Sketch’

“It was a blast,” Carden exclaimed. “Getting to see it on the big screen is adding another layer on what you hope it’s going to be. It just kind of blew my mind, exceeded my expectations, which were already high.”

“Getting to watch a movie like this in a big theater with a bunch of people was like a highlight of my life. It was so fun,” she noted.

“It was a long journey but very satisfying,” Hale admitted. “This has been a surreal week because it’s finally getting exposed to the world. It has been an eight-year journey, so it has been wild.”

“When D’Arcy and the kids came on board, you started to see the flesh being attached to the movie,” Hale acknowledged. “That was when it became very real.”

Tony Hale on taking on both roles producer and actor

On taking on both roles (producer and actor), Hale stated, “On the day we wrapped, I’ve never felt so elated because I knew the journey getting there.”

“All the weather delays, scheduling delays, and all those kinds of things. I literally picked up Seth and he’s not a small man. Seth is a big man. So, that was a really good day,” Hale elaborated.

“That day felt very joyful,” Carden added.

Playing their characters

On playing their characters, Carden said, “I like how Liz is really straightforward and I think she is so loyal and she’s such a good sister. She speaks truth. While she’s not a warm and fuzzy sister, she will not leave until it’s fixed.”

Hale continued, “I liked Taylor just because he was honest and also accepted the fact that he went about things the wrong way. Taylor thought this was the best choice to kind of compartmentalize emotion in the process of grief.”

“Taylor woke up realizing that it wasn’t the best choice and he moved on rather than beating himself up about it,” Hale added.

Lessons learned from the screenplay

On the lessons learned from this screenplay, Corden expressed, “I am a compartmentalizer. Every time I read it and every time I’ve watched it, it reminded me how important it is to feel your feelings and not to tuck it all away.”

“I felt that the other night, especially since we are always dealing with something, big or small. Watching it the other night, Amber really helped me remember that,” she noted.

“This is such a visual representation of ‘hey, we all got to do it and we all don’t want to do it.’  And that’s okay too, and it’s a different process for everybody,” Hale said.

Stage of their lives

On the title of the current chapter of their lives, the actors concurred, “Transition.”

“My daughter graduated high school last year and my wife and I moved. So, there’s a lot of like, a lot of new adventures,” Hale said.

“I’m in a similar phase, like some house stuff, some life stuff, so yeah, it feels like big next step moment,” Carden added.

Success

On her definition of success, Carden said, “ Success changes. I’m feeling so strongly that success means happiness, and being able to take care of myself, my family and the people I love. I think it means happiness and fulfillment.”

“This business tell you that you have value when it happens,” Hale said. “This is something I wish someone had told me when I was younger, that your value is the exact same before and after success, because that’s where your value really is.”

“It’s defined by people who love you and people who see you. Success is not defined by circumstances and quote the business,” Hale added.

The digital age

On being an actor in the digital age, Hale said, “I don’t know. To me, it all has to come back to honesty whatever the medium is. It’s definitely a different game from when I was younger. There were five networks when I was growing up and now there are thousands.”

Carden continued, “I think as an actor in the digital age, it can’t change that much. Otherwise, what are we doing? The reason that we’re doing this and what we’re doing has to revolve around honesty and the love.”

“Just roll with it and try to keep up with it but try not to obsess over the change,” Hale acknowledged.

“It’s such a unique business,” Hale admitted. “Cause I was telling somebody the other day that you really sign up for a career of rejection. You are just constant. There’s always going to be a rejection in this business, and I’ve been doing it for 30 years. Also, don’t take it personally even though it’s hard not to.”

Closing thoughts on ‘Sketch’

For fans and viewers, Hale said about the film, “I want kids to feel seen. Just processing feelings looks very different for different people. For me, people who have kids and parents to be seen, it’s all a learning curve.”

“Also, I would love for Seth Worley, the director, to be seen because he has such a unique vision and this is such a specific movie and I love for people to see his work,” Hale added.

“Seth is very special and has so much to give and it was thrilling to get to cross my fingers when we started. Seth is such a talent,” Carden concluded.
