Darryl W. Bullock RIP Darryl W. Bullock RIP music writer and a leading figure in Bristol’s LGBTQ+ world
We were sorry to hear of the passing of Darryl W. Bullock the acclaimed music writer with a whole raft of best-selling music books and a leading figure in Bristol’s LGBTQ+ world, and the author of a number of acclaimed books on music history and gay culture. A regular guest at our Louder Than Words, he was always a popular guest and was once described by Andy Partridge of XTC as ‘a veritable Bard of the bent, broken and Baroque’
He was the author of seven books, including The World’s Worst Records (Volumes 1 and 2), Florence Foster Jenkins: the Life of the World’s Worst Opera Singer (Duckworth-Overlook, 2016), singled out as ‘delightfully cheering’ by bestselling author Alexander McCall Smith in the New York Times, David Bowie Made Me Gay, the highly-regarded history of a century of LGBT pop music, The Infamous Cherry Sisters: The Worst Act in Vaudeville, and the internationally-acclaimed The Velvet Mafia: The Gay Men Who Ran the Swinging Sixties, winner of the Penderyn Music Book Prize 2022. His latest book, Pride, Pop and Politics, is published by Omnibus Press in June 2022. Darryl’s next book, which he had just completed, was a biography of record producer the legendary engineer, songwriter, and manager Joe Meek, which somehow tied together all his passions into one book and will be released posthumously in 2025.
A well regarded music writer Darryl wrote for many publications including The Guardian, Pitchfork, the Quietus, Songwriting Magazine, The Bath Chronicle, Venue, Folio, The Spark, B24-7, 3Sixty, The Bath Magazine, the Bristol Evening Post and The Western Daily Press. He has been profiled in The Guardian, The Sunday Times and GT and has featured on BBC One (The Big Questions), C4 (Come Dine With Me) and on numerous local and national radio and TV programmes.
