Dave Bautista Blasts Actors Who Complain About Making Movies
Former WWE star turned Hollywood star Dave Bautista has a complaint, and, ironically, it’s about actors complaining. However, his gripe is specifically about co-stars “b*tching, complaining, moaning, and groaning” about making movies while on set. The actor, who got his big break on the big screen playing cosmic warrior Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, asserted that those working in the industry are “fortunate” to be in such a position, so he prefers not to collaborate with people who are vocally critical about their jobs. Ultimately, he feels that life is too “short” to be surrounded by unwarranted negativity.
“I’m just at the age and at the point of my life where life’s just too goddamn short,” Bautista told Collider in a recent interview with his Afterburn director J.J. Perry. “I want to work with people I just love and respect, because I love this business. I love filmmaking, and if people don’t want to be there, I don’t want to be there with them. You know? I’m happy to be there. It’s a love thing for me, and I’m passionate about it. I want to be there, and I want to make the most of it, so I don’t want to hear people b*tching, complaining, moaning, and groaning about doing something that we’re all fortunate enough to be doing and making.”
Bautista has worked with a wide range of actors and directors since exiting the wrestling ring and entering the Hollywood circle, with some of the most notable being Timothée Chalamet and Josh Brolin in the Dune films, Sylvester Stallone in Escape Plan 2: Hades and its 2019 sequel, and Daniel Craig in Spectre and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. He also recently starred opposite Samuel L. Jackson in the post-apocalyptic sci-fi comedy Afterburn, which came as a surprise, as the actor has been actively seeking more diverse roles to avoid getting typecast as an action star. However, he had a good reason for signing on for the project:
“I’ve never seen somebody so supportive of a cast and crew. J.J. [Perry] makes filmmaking fun. I think everybody would agree. You’ll hear that story over and over. He’s just a fun guy to work with, and he’s super supportive and positive, and he’s energetic, and he knows when to drive people, and he knows when to ease up. He has a good gauge for it. So, when Afterburn came around, at the time, I just really didn’t want to do action films, but I thought, ‘Man, I would do this with J.J.’ And so I did. I talked to him and we talked about it. It was a bumpy road. Getting there was not easy, but we did it. We’re looking for more stuff to do together because of that relationship.”
What’s Next for Dave Bautista?
Dave Bautista as Jake in AfterburnInaugural Entertainment
Bautista has several upcoming projects, but some are in production limbo, so it is unclear if or when they will make it to screens. His next film is the action-thriller Trap House, which sounds like an exciting ensemble piece with some impressive talent behind it. It will open in theaters on Nov. 14, though it will face some stiff competition at the box office, as it is going up against tentpole releases like Predator: Badlands and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, which are due out the week before, along with Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, Jay Kelly, and The Running Man, which are scheduled to hit theaters in the same weekend as Trap House.
Bautista is also set to star as Beowulf opposite Jeff Bridges in the title role of Grendel, a live-action monster movie from the storied Jim Henson Company. Other titles on his roster include Alpha Gang, The Wrecking Crew, and an untitled FBI wedding sting comedy with Anne Hathaway. The actor currently has 13 “upcoming” projects listed on his IMDb page, so there will be no shortage of Bautista on our screens for the foreseeable future — but if you can’t wait, then his most recent film, Afterburn, is currently available to rent or purchase on the likes of Prime Video and Apple TV, following a short theatrical run in select U.S. theaters in August.
