Delhi govt pushes for faster completion of underpass, flyover to ease traffic, ETInfra

PWD Minister Parvesh Verma is advocating for the rapid completion of an underpass and flyover at the crucial UER-II and Gurgaon-Jaipur Highway junction. PWD minister Parvesh Verma on Thursday sought the speedy construction of an underpass and a flyover at the intersection of Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and Gurgaon-Jaipur Highway to resolve the city’s persistent traffic bottlenecks.

The infrastructure project, being built by National Highways Authority of India, aims to address the long-standing issue of congestion in west and outer Delhi. Lakhs of vehicles pass through this stretch daily and delays at the junction result in time loss, fuel consumption and increased air pollution, govt stated. Located at a strategic point connecting Najafgarh, Dwarka, Rohini and National Highway 8, the flyover and the underpass are expected to significantly ease traffic load and reduce dependence on overcrowded alternative routes.

Verma said, “The underpass is part of UER-II project in Delhi, specifically the Dwarka Expressway section near IGI Airport. This underpass, along with other infrastructure like elevated viaducts, flyovers and bridges, is designed to improve connectivity and reduce travel time between different parts of Delhi and Gurgaon.”

The minister, who inspected the stretch, added, “I came to review the mistakes made along with all the consultants. We will study it again and try to fix any remaining issues or gaps. The people of Delhi deserve long-term, practical solutions, not patchwork fixes. We are committed to ensuring that this project genuinely decongests the city.”

Environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who was also part of the team, said, “Our goal is to find ways to control pollution, which increases significantly due to heavy traffic. Projects like this will help address not just congestion but also Delhi’s air quality concerns.”

The ministers said timely completion, technical accuracy and citizen-focused planning were critical to the project’s success. Regular reviews will be carried out to ensure accountability at every stage. Though the challenge of traffic congestion persisted for years, the current phase marks a focused and coordinated effort to deliver long-term relief, making Delhi’s roads safer and faster, they added.

Traffic congestion is a frequent issue at Shiv Murti Chowk in Dwarka, especially where it connects with UER-II, partly due to the convergence of traffic from Dwarka Expressway, Kapashera and NH-48 as well as the construction of UER-II. Officials said these projects would give major relief from traffic jams not just to the people of Delhi but also to the neighbouring NCR areas.
